The Battle Royale's Niche Traversal Techniques Are Going Mainstream This Season

The game developers has a special treat in store for the popular battle royale gamers, perfectly timed for festive season. Enthusiasts of this game's super-slick movement can rejoice to discover that an innovative traversal feature is being implemented when the Amped season launches on Nov. 4.

Unveiling The Mantle Boost

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability gives players a surge of propulsion when scaling obstacles. As explained lead battle royale designer the design lead, this technique was previously been a feature of the game for some time, often called as "ledge boosting." However it's no easy feat for the average player, and is mainly used by pro gamers in competitive play or tournaments. This season, Respawn is making it easier for players of all skill levels to successfully perform these tricky speed-boosts.

"Mantle Boosts existed in Apex for a while, but executing it isn't easy to perform and gamers might not realize it [is in the game] without outside knowledge," Canavese states. "Now including a visual cue so players can clearly identify when and how to trigger the high-octane traversal skill, opening up the feature and introducing fresh strategies to compete for more players."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

Why make a once niche technique available to everyone? Lead Legend designer the development lead says developers aims for gamers to experience empowerment — including ones who are new.

"Our community is doing other crazy stuff like super-glides and tap-strafing, and we examined at our competition, observed what the community execute, and we said, 'How can we provide some of this power to more players?'" Mohan explains. "Since currently, some of these techniques are somewhat awkward to use — you need to remap your keybinds and hit precise timings. We proposed, 'What if we create a more official implementation?'"

The Amped Update Movement Focus

Mobility is largely the central theme in this season, with Legends Horizon, the defensive specialist, and the aerial combatant receiving enhancements to help keep them mobile. The cooldown period on her tactical ability has been decreased, and this skill will propel users upward much quicker than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover feature overhead protection and capability to provide speed boosts to those nearby. But it's the high-flying Valkyrie who's getting significant improvements this season, with various adjustments implemented to make her stronger, faster, and more lethal.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time is here," says Legend designer the designer. "Certainly that she's been top-tier previously, but due to the addition of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and Evac Towers, it felt like she fell behind in current the game. It was a really great opportunity for the team to revisit a bunch of aspects in her abilities and sort of restore her to her glory days."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore her competitive status in current strategies, Holstead says the team assessed each of her abilities and implemented some powerful modifications. Her jetpack have been upgraded, boosting her speed during flight, and the jets themselves regenerates three times faster, allowing her to spend more time aloft. Now she won't take damage from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to tag enemies who take damage from it. Her Skyward Dive ability — which lifts her entire squad skyward for redeployment or escape — requires much less time to fire up. She's also getting some new Legend Upgrades that players can choose to conserve resources, widen the area of her rockets, or further speed up her Skyward Dive takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment now delivers on the pilot experience," Holstead says.

Olympus Improvements

Even the game's only floating arena, Olympus, receives a movement-friendly overhaul, with an extensive redesign that opens up bottlenecks and makes securing elevated positions more manageable. The developers state Apex Legends Season 27 is all about giving players the resources they need to compete in the competition.

"Essentially, we examined the game's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," says lead Legend designer Josh Mohan.

The battle royale the Amped season releases November 4th at the specified times.
